Homes Jesus Visited

Lesson 14

A HOUSE AT BETHANY AND AN UPPER ROOM IN JERUSALEM

                                                             John 12:1-8; 13:1-17

1.                  These two events have at least the following things in common:

a.                   When they occur –

b.                  How Jesus acts –

c.                   What the accounts involve –

2.                  We consider them together because the contrast between them provides a thought-provoking glimpse of the wise and considerate patience he introduces into households.

3.                  The house at Bethany (Matt. 26:6-13; Mk. 14:3-9; Jn. 12:1-8)

a.                   Compare Jn. 12:1 and Matt. 21:17.  What does this suggest?

b.                  According to Matthew and Mark, in whose house did this event occur, and according to John, why?

c.                   What did Mary do, and why?

d.                  How do the records of what she did in Mark and John complement each other?

e.                   Compare Matt. 26:8-10a; Mk. 14:4-5; and Jn. 12:4-6.  What progression of thought do they offer on the disciples’ response to what Mary did?

f.                   What is there about Mary’s actions that should be spoken in memory of her wherever the gospel is proclaimed?

g.                  Consider Matt. 26:14-16 and Mk. 14:10-11.  Why did what happened here not stay in the house at Bethany?

4.                  The upper room at Jerusalem (Matt. 26:17-29; Mk. 14:12-25; Lk. 22:7-38; Jn. 13:1-17:26)

a.                   What does Lk. 22:11-12 tell us about the setting?

b.                  Compare Lk. 22:15-16 and Jn. 13:1, 3.  Describe what we know of the emotions Jesus was experiencing, and why.

c.                   What detail does a comparison of Jn. 13:3 and Mk. 14:18-20 reveal?

d.                  What does Lk. 22:24 say began to happen among the disciples?  Why at this moment?

e.                   What, according to John, did Jesus do about it?

f.                   What lesson did he mean for them to learn from what he did?

g.                  How are Lk. 22:27 and Jn. 13:13, 16 related?

5.                  In which case do you think the Lord showed the most patience?

6.                  How are the wisdom and consideration of humility shown by him in each case?

7.                  What should his actions in these two episodes mean in our own houses?
