AT THE HOUSE OF A RULER OF THE PHARISEES
Luke 14:1-24
1. What are the details about the setting for this visit that impress you? (Cf. v. 1, 7, 12)
2. How is this episode similar to the other occasions when Jesus was a guest in the home of a Pharisee? How is it different?
3. There are four movements in the conversation, each part being directed to a particular audience, and each teaching one great lesson.
4. Verses 2-6: to the lawyers and Pharisees.
a. Is the presence of the man with dropsy is related to their watching him?
b. Were there any options open to the Lord in responding to the man before him?
c. What issue did Jesus identify in the situation?
d. What failure on the part of the lawyers and Pharisees did the Lord bring to light?

6. Verses 12-14: to the man who had invited him.
a. What might have caused Jesus to offer this advice to his host?
b. Was the problem who the man invited or why he invited them?
c. Does this imply that it is improper to have friends and family over?

e. Give some examples of occasions where this lesson might apply in our lives.
7. Verses 15-24: to one of those at the table with him.
a. What comment did this man make?
b. Why do you think he said it at this point?
c. In the Lord’s story about the man who invited people to eat bread at his banquet, what was wrong with the behavior of his invited guests?
d. What did the man who made the banquet do then?
e. Appreciate the invitation: instead of just talking about it, let the kingdom be the ________________ in your life.
