Lesson 9

THE HOUSE IN THE DISTRICT OF TYRE AND SIDON

                                                   Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30

1.                  What is the significance of Jesus’ being in the region of Tyre and Sidon?

2.                  What does the fact that he “withdrew” to those parts (Matt.15:31) and that he “did not want anyone to know” (Mk.7:24) suggest about his purpose in being there?  (This will have a bearing upon the rest of the story.)

3.                  What are the important details we have about the identity of the woman who came to him at this house?  (Matt. 15:22; Mk. 7:26)

4.                  What need did the woman have at her house? (Mk.7:25; Matt.15:22; Mk.7:30)

5.                  Why could Jesus not be hidden from her? (Mk.7:24,25; Matt.4:24; 15:22)

6.                  Describe the manner in which the woman came to Jesus and the attitude which she showed.

7.                  What was the first response of Jesus to the her pleas?  (Matt.15:23)

8.                  What did the disciples beg Jesus to do?

9.                  To whom did Jesus say, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matt.15:24)?  What does this have to do with the other things that are said in this episode?  Is this the first time the Lord granted a Gentile’s request?

10.              What did the woman do then? (Matt.15:25)

11.              Why do you think Jesus spoke to her as he did in Mk.7:27 and Matt.15:26?

12.              What does the woman’s reply in Matt.15:27 and Mk.7:28 tell us about her?

13.              Why do you think Jesus was impressed with her faith (Matt.15:28)?  What does this statement by him tell us about his purpose in the whole conversation?  Who is the other person Jesus said had great faith?

14.              What details in the record indicate the nature of the miracles Jesus did?  (Matt.15:28; Mk.7:29,30)

15.              What did Jesus mean for his disciples to learn from what happened at this house?
