Lesson 8

 

                                                    AT THE HOUSE OF JAIRUS

                                        Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56

 

1.                  This is a case in which what is happening in one home reaches much farther than just that house and impacts more lives than just that family.

 

2.                  Think about the setting...When a man fears the worst at his own house he will not be able to pay attention to much else.  This event indicates the Lord understands that.

 

3.                  Jairus: a man with a tender concern for his child.

a.                   In Mk. 5:23, how does he speak of her?

b.                  What further details are provided in Lk. 8:42?

c.                   Any relationship with the power to bless also has the capacity to hurt.  What did Jairus know of the pain that can be involved?  (Mk.5:23; Lk.8:42; Matt.9:18)

d.                  Notice what Lk. 8:41 says he actually asked Jesus to do.  How is what this man did with his fear a lesson for us?

 

4.                  Jairus: a man with a humble strength about him.

a.                   Why did it take courage for him to do what he does here?

i.                    In view of his position?

ii.                  In view of his daughter’s condition?

b.                  Consider some of the indications of manhood in his actions.

i.                    He went _______________ to the Lord.

ii.                  He went _____ ______________ ____ his child.

iii.                He implored earnestly for _____________.

c.                   How did Jesus respond to the humility of Jairus?  (Notice Lk.8:42 again)

 

5.                  Jairus: a man with a gentle patience regarding life.

a.                   What happened as Jesus moved toward Jairus’ house?  How would you have dealt with that situation if you had been Jairus?

b.                  What do we not see or hear in the account of Jesus’ dealings with the woman?

c.                   Can you think of any reasons why he might have been able to wait through the inconvenience of people with quiet dignity?

i.                    What about his attitude toward Jesus?

ii.                  What about his thinking regarding the woman?

iii.                What about his understanding of himself?

 

6.                  Jairus: a man with a steady faith in the Lord.

a.                   What occurred in the following instances which might have caused him to waver?

i.                    Mk. 5:35 –

ii.                  Mk. 5:38 –

iii.                Mk. 5:40 –


b.                  How did Jairus feel in the face of these events?

c.                   What did he do?

 

7.                  Jairus: a man with a thoughtful respect for holy things.

a.                   How does his demeanor indicate that he could be respectful about life?

b.                  Notice how in each of these cases Jesus called for his authority to be respected, and how Jairus gave it.

8.                  What details do you see in this event that tell us something about the nature of the miracle that occurred?

 

9.                  What does the presence of Peter and James and John (Mk. 5:37) indicate about the importance of this moment in the ministry of Jesus?

 

10.              What should we learn from this episode that may help us when the worst of fears attacks our homes?
