Homes Jesus Visited

Lesson 2

                                                HIS HOME AND HIS MINISTRY

1.                  Passages like Mark 6:1, Luke 2:39f, and Luke 2:43-45 allow us to know that as Jesus grew up he had a hometown, extended family, and friends.  What does this tell us about his home life?

2.                  According to Matthew 4:13, what did he do as he was beginning his ministry?

a.                   What does verse 12 indicate about the circumstance?

b.                  What do Luke 4:31 and the preceding verses add to our understanding of the circumstances?

c.                   Comparing Matt. 9:1 and Mk. 2:1, how is this city referred to?

d.                  Why might he have chosen this as a base of operations?

e.                   According to Matt. 4:14-16, what did it mean?

3.                  The record indicates that he had a place there to stay.

a.                   Notice the mention of “the house” in Matt. 9:27-28; 13:1, 36.

b.                  Mk. 2:1 and 3:20 describe him as being “at home.”

c.                   What are the possible explanations?

d.                  How might Luke 9:58 add to our understanding of the circumstance?

4.                  As we read Mark we discover that Jesus returned to the house in Capernaum at various junctures throughout his ministry (Mark 2:1; 3:20; 7:17; 9:28,33; 10:10).

a.                   What does this tell us about “home”?

b.                  What does it reveal to us about ministry?  What often happened when he went home?

c.                   Consider especially Mk. 7:17 and 10:10.  What use was made of home at these times?

5.                  In light of what we have learned about his home during his ministry, think of what Mark 3:21, 31-32, and John 7:3-5, and John 19:25-27 might tell us about our Lord’s family experience.
